When You Feel Like Giving Up on Your Dreams

Do you remember being a child and dreaming of what you wanted to be when you grew up?
When you set your sights on something you saw no obstacles in your way. That was what you wanted to be and nothing was going to stand in your way. So maybe after awhile it was replaced by a new dream, a new path you were determined to take, but still you wouldn’t see any obstacles in the way.
So why as we grow older, are our dreams less important? We can discard them and put it in the too hard basket when it seems like it isn’t going to happen.
We just give up and push it to the side like it never mattered.
Meanwhile it festers inside you. This longing that you choose to ignore. But you are just pushing it deeper and deeper. But it’s still there.
And it always will be until you deal with it.
My Story
Since I was a child, I always wanted to be a writer. There were other things I wanted to be at times, but writing was always something that I felt was ingrained in me. And even when I tried to give it up, I couldn’t. Nobody understood how much I loved to write, and they thought I was wasting my time on something that would never happen.
For so long I believed it. I stayed at a job I hated and I was miserable. I lost my focus in life and felt like there was no point to anything. Nobody believed I could do it, and I gave up.
But that feeling was always there over the years and wouldn’t go away. I tried.
Anything that I did get around to writing would get put in a drawer and forgotten about, or typed on the computer never to be seen again.
I had no motivation.
Then just over two years ago I decided to start this blog. It was something I decided to do for myself.
I didn’t know if anyone would read it, but it would be out there for people to read.
So I get to do something I love, and I like that I could be helping someone at the same time.
I’m nowhere near the dream I had as a child, but at least I’m making progress. And I’m not pushing it away anymore.
Tips For Accomplishing Your Dreams
Be realistic. There is no point wasting your time and energy and feeling defeated over something that is likely never going to happen.
If it’s important to you, don’t give up.
Focus on why you want it and don’t lose sight of it.
Wake up every day and decide to do the best you can. Be the best you can be.
Make a list of small steps or goals you need to do to get closer to achieving your dream. Put it up on the fridge, or somewhere you will see it every day. Let it motivate you.
Remember that nothing will ever be handed to you. You have to work for what you want. Fight for it. Do whatever you have to do.
Don’t wait for an opportunity to fall into your lap. Create your own opportunities. Make things happen. Otherwise you could be waiting forever.
Don’t let others tear you down, or make you feel like your dream isn’t important.
Find people with similar interests or goals, maybe through a Facebook group or other pages or groups. Often the people around you don’t understand why it’s important to you. It can be a great motivation to have people who understand and to share tips and advice.
Step out of your comfort zone and take a chance. Nothing ever happens there.
Be positive. A negative attitude is a killer of dreams. And the more you think it, the more you will believe it.

And if it doesn’t, and you find yourself relieved or feeling free from it, then let it go and find something else you enjoy.
Life is too short to spend it on things you don’t find fulfilling.
Find your passion in life and don’t let it go. Go for your dreams. Reach for the stars!
Do whatever it takes.
There are plenty of success stories. That’s why you should never give up on your dreams.
Never think to yourself, “I give up,” because then chances are, you will.
Don’t give up.
Your dreams are worth more than you think.
How do you keep going when you feel like giving up on your dreams? Do you regret giving up on something?

Candice, I loved reading all of this well-written article! I can so relate to everything you wrote. When in high school, I won many ‘essay contests’ and even a couple of scholarships so I knew I enjoyed to write. But through the years was not able to indulge other than putting together well-written reports and emails during my ‘real job’ in various career positions I had. But I know what you’re saying…. that urge that you need to do more, write more, make a difference. My husband thought I was dreaming when I announced I wanted to become a professional blogger. But I forged forward in the ‘unknown world of WordPress’ and here I am, about 8 months in. Thank you for sharing your insights.

Beautiful! I love this article, especially your tip about setting small goals. It’s not easy to believe in yourself when seemingly everyone else doesn’t believe in you, but focusing on the small goals can really help move forward.

I love the advice about listing small, achievable goals that you can accomplish to motivate yourself, AND to remember that nothing will be handed to you. This is both a challenge and and encouragement, because when you accomplish something, you know YOU did it! No matter how small or large you may feel it is – you did it!
A lot of good advice: thanks for sharing!

Such a great inspirational post. I have this belief that if it keeps popping up into your mind then there is a reason why, and you should go after it. My grandfather also used to say ‘What ever is meant for you won’t go by you’ and I believe him 100%.

What a relatable piece on so many levels. My fiance and I are both in creative fields following our passions, but it’s damn hard. As a child, I was fed the “follow your dreams” schtick so much, but in reality, dreams are a struggle. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be dreams.
Thanks for sharing! We all need a pick-me-up sometimes. I know I do!
